Five police officers have been relieved of their duties following the killing of a 28-year-old woman on April 1 outside the police station in the suburb of Agioi Anargyroi, north of Athens. Among the suspended officers are the station commander and the emergency dispatcher who was on the phone with the victim when she was killed.

According to Greek media reports, Kyriaki Griva, 28, went to the police station on the evening of April 1 after fearing for her life from her ex-partner. The woman stayed inside the police station of Agioi Anargyroi for eight minutes and after she left she called the police emergency center to ask for a car to accompany her home.

In the phone call reported by Greek media, the switchboard agent told the woman that "the police car is not a taxi" and that he could not escort her home from where she was, but could send a squad car directly to the woman's house. While the conversation was taking place, the ex-partner reached the woman outside the police station and stabbed her several times to death.

Her killing sparked outrage in the country, with the police under fire for failing to appreciate the seriousness of the danger she faced when she reported her concerns to the Agioi Anargyroi police station.

The head of the Athens Prosecutor's Office, Antonis Eleftherianos, has ordered a full investigation into "possible shortcomings on the part of the police officers on duty at the time of the tragedy".
