On March 5, 2026, the territory of the Republic of Azerbaijan was subjected to a reckless armed attack from the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran, using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with remote-controlled detonators.
As confirmed by the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense through technical means, four such unmanned aerial vehicles were launched from the territory of Iran towards the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan.
While one of these UAVs was neutralized, the other three headed towards Nakhchivan International Airport and a school building. Fortunately, the UAV aimed at the school did not hit the building and exploded nearby.
As a result, at least four civilians were injured and significant material damage was caused to Nakhchivan International Airport, which provides the only transport link between the main part of Azerbaijan and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, serving about 400 thousand residents of the region.
As a result, airport operations had to be temporarily suspended to ensure the safety of civil aviation. The attack also disrupted the functioning of educational institutions in the area.
This attack on civilian objects constitutes a serious violation of international law, including the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity, and constitutes a terrorist act that threatens the lives of civilians.
Baku has demanded that the Iranian side provide an official explanation, present an official apology, and ensure that those responsible for this criminal act are held accountable. The Iranian ambassador was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on March 5, 2026, and an official protest was handed over.
Azerbaijan expects immediate steps from the Iranian authorities to clarify the armed incident directed against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and to provide clear guarantees against the repetition of such actions.
While my country remains committed to peace and stability in the region, it reserves the right to take proportionate steps necessary to ensure its national security. Appropriate protective and preventive measures have been initiated.
At the same time, as has been emphasized on many occasions at the highest official levels, the territory of Azerbaijan has never been and will never be used against neighboring states.
Azerbaijan's foreign policy is based on mutual respect, non-interference in internal affairs, and constructive cooperation with its neighbors.
Therefore, we call on the international community to uphold international law and condemn attacks against civilian infrastructure.
Ensuring regional stability requires restraint, peaceful resolution of disputes, and respect for the sovereignty of states.
