The Competition Authority has announced the launch of a broad monitoring of the retail market, which aims to assess the price level of basic daily consumption products in the main supermarkets operating in Albania.

The decision comes in response to numerous complaints from citizens, accompanied by concerns raised by members of Parliament, regarding the increase in prices of food products and other essential items for Albanian families.

According to the official announcement, the monitoring will cover a wide period of time, from January 1, 2025 to June 2026, and will focus on analyzing data on total sales, consumption structure and price performance.

In this context, the Authority has officially addressed commercial entities, asking them to submit detailed information on sales made during this period, as well as a list of 30 products that account for the main share in their turnover. These items will be subject to an in-depth comparative analysis of market behavior.

The increase in prices in recent months has also been noted by the Institute of Statistics.

According to the latest data reported by INSTAT, the inflation rate for June 2026 reached 3.2%, up from 2.4% in June last year.

The rise in the cost of living this month has been driven primarily by two main groups that directly affect citizens' pockets, which are food and rent.
