After four days of debate, the Meurthe-et-Moselle Serious Crimes Court sentenced Liridon Berisha, 27, to life imprisonment for the murder of his partner, Stephanie Di Vincenzo, who was stabbed in the middle of the street in Hayange (Moselle), on the night between May 23 and 24, 2021.

The sentence was accompanied by a non-parole period of 18 years. In 2024, in the first instance, the sentence was accompanied by a non-parole period of 22 years, the maximum provided for, AFP reports.

The victim was stabbed in front of the couple's child.

The victim, 22, was massacred by her partner as she desperately tried to seek help from law enforcement by ringing the intercom of the Hayange police station, which is located 45 meters from her apartment, from which she had escaped through the window.

Her partner had chased her down the street with a knife, stabbing her in front of neighbors and the couple's child, who was 4 years old at the time.

A scene described as "out of the ordinary in terms of violence" by the prosecutor general, Nicolas Burkel, on Friday. "Neither the presence of witnesses nor that of his daughter prevented him from continuing the act," he continued. "As in the bullfight, he pierced her to weaken her before taking her life, and then spat on her body, an additional blow of vileness!"

He had requested confirmation of the sentence given in the first instance, describing it as a "sentence of social elimination".

On the other hand, Arnaud Blanc, Liridon Berisha's lawyer, according to the media "Ouest-France", recalled that his client was "born in 1998, in the middle of the Kosovo war, where the greatest massacre of that war took place, and that after arriving in French territory he was placed under guard, as 'terror prevailed within the family'".

But the femicide caused controversy. Law enforcement had intervened about ten times in the couple's apartment before the horrific act was committed. Several months before the murder, the victim had filed a complaint, which was not forwarded to the prosecutor's office.
