Judge Astrit Kalaja , who was shot dead in the courtroom of the Court of Appeal in Tirana, was a magistrate with over 3 decades of experience in the country's justice system.

Kalaja passed the vetting in 2019, while the KPA confirmed him in office in January 2022.

Despite his confirmation, the public commissioner requested Kalaja's dismissal from office, claiming that the judge did not make a sufficient declaration of an apartment and a land area.

Born in the city of Shkodra, he graduated from the Faculty of Law in 1993. After completing his studies with the title of ''jurist'', he was appointed as a judge at the Shkodra court.

He previously held the position of acting president of the Shkodra court. From graduation until June 2004, he worked as a judge in Shkodra.

Then, until January 2023, he was at the Court of Appeal in Shkodra and for more than two years, he served at the Court of Appeal in Tirana.

We recall that Astrit Kalaja was also elected as a member of the Electoral College three times in a row. Astrit Kalaja was born in Shkodra and graduated in 1993 from the Faculty of Law.

The tragic event occurred at around 3:40 PM, when the perpetrator, identified as Elvis Shkëmbi, fired a gun at the judge, who was immediately transported to the Trauma Hospital, where he arrived lifeless.
