The Special Court Against Corruption and Organized Crime (SCOC) will hold a preliminary hearing today on the case against Erion Veliaj, his wife and other individuals. The hearing is expected to begin at 09:00, where it will be decided whether or not the case will proceed to trial.

But, due to the tragic incident recorded a few days ago where judge Astrit Kalaja was shot dead in the courtroom, the judges have boycotted all court hearings, including today's. It is not yet known whether the hearing for Veliaj will take place or not.

Veliaj will face five serious charges in court: corruption, money laundering, concealment of assets, abuse of office, and bringing prohibited items into the cell.

According to SPAK, Veliaj is accused of passive corruption in 9 cases, in relations with several companies that, in exchange for irregular benefits in money and real estate, have obtained construction permits or public funds from the Municipality of Tirana.

Veliaj was dismissed from the post of mayor of Tirana on September 25, by decision of the Council of Ministers, on the grounds that he had not reported to duty for more than three months, since his arrest on February 10.

But today Veliaj filed an appeal with the Constitutional Court, a request that suspends his dismissal and blocks early elections in Tirana until the highest court in the country rules.
