Professor and researcher Irakli Koçollari said that Albanian nationalism was born at the time of Ali Pasha.

He told the media that he has found documents that claim that he had an agreement with the Tsar of Russia for the secession of an Albanian state.

Koçollari: If we want to be objective, Ali Pasha had it all. He was a great man and the pioneer of Albanian nationalization. Albanian nationalization was born later than among the other peoples of the Balkans and as a result the movement came late and we were the last state to be formed.

Those documents found about Ali Pasha overturn such a thing and our nationalism is much earlier. In 1797, when the Greek revolution had not started, we find documents in the Russian archives about a secret agreement between Ali Pasha and the Tsar of Russia. The agreement talks about breaking away from the Ottoman Empire and creating an independent state. The agreement consists of 8 points and Ali Pasha says "I will break away from the Ottoman Empire. I will create my own independent state, says Ali Pasha. I know my power at this time, it had been 6 years since he had taken power and sought the support of Tsarist Russia. Russia was a great power.
