Why does the Pentagon have this shape?

The Pentagon, the pentagonal office complex that became the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense, was officially inaugurated on September 15, 1943.

The Pentagon is a large building of 6 km2, of which 4 km2 are used as offices, the rest for various services, shops, restaurants, conference rooms, etc. Thousands of civilians and military personnel work inside the building.

The building is called the Pentagon because it has 5 sides, 5 floors above ground (2 levels underground), each floor has 5 ring corridors of 28.2 km length. The Pentagon is spread over a territory of 5 hectares. The Pentagon also has a central square, known informally as "ground zero" - ground turned into nothing, zero, 0, burnt, flattened - name from the time of the Cold War when it was thought that the Soviet Union would intend to drop a or more nuclear missiles in this square in the event of a nuclear war.

History

In the summer of 1941, the General Staff of the United States Army thought that an inevitable involvement in World War II was possible, but the War Department was spread over many buildings in Washington and, according to senior management, a headquarters was needed new, safer and more functional.

So on a Thursday in July, General Brehon B. Somervell charged his design team with designing a building that could house 40,000 people, include parking for 10,000 cars and rise no higher than four stories, so that not block the view of Washington. And the Pentagon project was due next Monday.

The place to build the Pentagon was a piece of land on the outskirts of Washington, bordered on five sides. For this reason, the designers decided to model it after that area, even if they later preferred to move it elsewhere, outside the borders of the US capital, in Arlington County, Virginia.

The pentagonal shape had several advantages. For example, moving around the building, distances became 30% to 50% shorter than they would be in a rectangular area.
