41 years since the "suicide of the century" in Albania
Enver Hoxha and Mehmet Shehu

The longest serving former Prime Minister of Albania, Mehmet Shehu, was one of the most potential figures of the dictatorial system in Albania, after leading the country for nearly 30 years as Prime Minister.

The General Directorate of Archives has brought to mind today one of the most mysterious dates of the communist regime during the 80s, the suicide of Mehmet Shehu, no. 2 of the regime, succeeding Enver Hoxha.

"Like today, on December 18, 1981, the Council of Ministers held a meeting about the suicide of the former Albanian Prime Minister, Mehmet Shehu.

After about 40 years from this event, the act of suicide of one of the most important political figures of the time, potentially succeeding Enver Hoxha, continues to be a source of controversy. According to the official version, on the evening of December 17, 1981, Shehu committed suicide, after the meeting of the Political Bureau, where he was harshly criticized by the dictator Hoxha and other members of this body.

"The Political Bureau met yesterday to examine the self-criticism it had made yesterday and examined it. The meeting would continue today. At the meeting, all the comrades who discussed were not satisfied and did not accept this self-criticism, although it was 39 pages, because it was completely stale, false, all lies, phraseology and nothing about the real political and ideological reasons that led him to make a such an engagement, such an opportunistic and liberal act. After the fair, principled criticisms that were made to him from all the time of the Political Bureau, members and candidates, he was asked to reflect more deeply on the causes of this action", it is revealed, among other things, by the words of Adil Çarçani in the minutes of the meeting held beginning after the suicide, on December 18 (documents attached)", the Archive writes.
