A month after the Democratic Front took control of the new National Assembly in Albania, on January 2, 1946, the communist government announced the outlawing of the monarchy.

Thus, King Zog was officially dismissed de-jure. He and his heirs were stripped of all rights and property and were "forever" forbidden to return to the territory of Albania.

The communists declared Albania the People's Socialist Republic, de jure deposing King Zog. Earlier, Zogu issued a statement, calling the elections of December 1945 not free and, as such, could not overthrow the monarchy.

He himself understood that the theory of legality could not apply in this case, since he himself deposed Prince Vid from the throne in 1925 through the proclamation of the Republic.
