The city of Schaffhausen in Switzerland

Although Switzerland remained neutral during World War II, it was bombed several times. And always wrongly.

The most serious event occurred on April 1, 1944. On that day, the 392nd Bombardment Group of the US Air Force attacked the city of Schaffhausen in northern Switzerland with about thirty B-24s.

The raid, which started from England, dropped about 1,200 bombs, which destroyed neighborhoods, factories, stations and railway lines, causing about forty deaths and 150 injuries. The aviators were convinced that they had hit several chemical plants in Ludwigshafen, about 250 km from Schaffhausen, in German territory. The error was probably caused by a malfunction of the detection systems.

The proximity to the German border was the origin of other "off target" bombings. In Steimam-Rhein and other cities, 21 people died and in Zurich, which was confused with the German Freiburg, 7 people died. In 1940 dozens of small US raids hit various countries.
