Doctors at the University Hospital Center in Tirana successfully performed the rare operation for the first time on a 4-year-old child.
Under the direction of Prof. Dritan Alushani, the 4-year-old underwent an intervention where the urinary bladder was enlarged with a ureter in a unique case, with the same ureter being reimplanted.
The goal of this intervention is to allow the urinary tract to function normally without the need for constant catheterization.
"We have a 4-year-old child who practically presented to us immediately after birth with a severe urinary tract anomaly. After the examination, the left kidney was non-functional, we needed to preserve the urinary tract and kidney to use them further to perform bladder enlargement, so that in the future the child would have some kind of capacity. It is an operation that has been performed for the first time, it is rare. This way the child has the opportunity to urinate on his own," the doctor said.
Meanwhile, the child's health condition is very good.
Also present during this operation were Dr. Amarold Balliu, Dr. Aulona Haxhirexha, Dr. Labeat Haxhirexha and the ward and service nurses.
