An operation by the Spanish Police has resulted in the seizure of more than 3 tons of cocaine and the arrest of 11 suspected members of an international drug trafficking network, made up of Albanians, Colombians and Spaniards in Xirivella.
Some of the traffickers tried to escape when the drugs were seized, but the anti-drug agents prevented them with a police cordon, "Dita" newspaper reports.
The anti-drug operation took place around 1:45 p.m. Thursday as investigators were following a truck carrying a container of cocaine disguised as sugar.
After surrounding the vehicle and observing the suspects, a group of anti-drug agents arrested the traffickers just as they were preparing to extract the quantity of cocaine from the metal structure of the container.
"The police acted very quickly. Five or six officers wearing bulletproof vests entered and jumped on two of the men on the terrace. Another one who was at the table ran up the stairs to the second floor, but shortly after he was taken down with his hands in handcuffs," said an eyewitness to the Spanish media.
The drug shipment arrived at the port of Valencia in two containers from Guayaquil, Ecuador.
