"Tirana Walk 2021", the newest project for the capital, envisages the return of the former Blloku to a pedestrian zone.
The project presented today, in the premises of Villa 31, in the presence of Prime Minister Edi Rama, is a collaboration between the Municipality of Tirana and the global network "WALK 21", which promotes walking activity.
Prime Minister Edi Rama, during the presentation of this project in the "heart" of Tirana, said that this is a good step also for avoiding vehicle traffic.
"We need to be courageous in pedestrianizing spaces and avoid the fixed idea that roads need to be widened to remove traffic. I mean inner city roads, you can widen them by one lane by cutting down trees, but it won't change. On the contrary, it is very likely that traffic intensity will increase. Meanwhile, the opposite turns out to be true. Discouraging traffic is the answer!"
According to him, businesses in this area will benefit greatly.
"This is a central, easily accessible area, where generally the distances to be covered are not long. By stimulating walking, it will also be much more efficient for businesses in the area, which are the first to complain about the interruption of access to the door, but are the first to benefit."
With a touch of humor, he spoke about the benefits of walking.
"You can leave the car, using your feet more. Democracy has come with a lot of cholesterol in Albania, the average weight of the population is much higher, certainly thanks to welfare, but also to food poisons that are best avoided. But here I don't want to take on the competences of Nard Ndoka's field..."
Regarding double parking, Rama mentioned it as an element that should be eliminated to ease traffic and create better opportunities for the circulation of cars and people.
"We will intervene to dramatically curb double parking!" , emphasized the head of government.
He also emphasized that widening roads is not always the solution to reducing traffic, comparing it to the Lungomare project in Vlora, where a narrower road succeeded in creating a more spacious space.
"I will bring you the case of Vlora where there was a debate about the Lungomare where the Belgian designers brought a narrow road and those who opposed it wanted a much wider road. In fact, the road in Lungomare works best. The fact that it is more on foot than by car, the flow of people is much greater and of course what was said here is the right approach that requires some time for information and exchange of the project and idea. We need to think about more spaces for underground parking. The next step is to tackle double parking which is the main problem", Rama concluded.
The project refers to the three main streets of the block, “Ismail Qemali” Street, “Pjetër Bogdani” Street and “Brigada 8” Street. It is also applied to the intersections of these streets and “Sami Frashëri” Street, and includes some refinishing of “Vaso Pasha” Street.
More specifically, “Brigada VIII” and “Pjeter Bogdani” streets will be freed from the parking row, which will be added to the sidewalk space.
While “Ismail Qemali” Street, being a main road, will have a bicycle lane and only one parking row. Due to its importance, parking is foreseen on only one side, maintaining a balance between vehicle access and priority for pedestrians and cyclists.
