Following the violent protests in Zvërnec, the Greek Foreign Ministry has rushed to engage in the public debate, using this opportunity to raise claims about the extent of the Greek minority in Albania.

Official Athens declares that it is concerned about this episode, where a Greek citizen was injured during the collision.

According to Greek authorities, the Greek Embassy in Tirana immediately intervened to provide him with the necessary consular and medical assistance.

Greece took advantage of Saturday's violent protest, claiming for the first time the existence of a Greek minority in Zvërnec.

The Greek side has asked the Albanian authorities to fully investigate the incident and identify those responsible for the incidents.

The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasizes the importance of respecting the rule of law, protecting property rights and the rights of members of the Greek National Minority in Albania.

The statement also emphasizes the need for effective protection of environmentally protected areas, in accordance with European standards and legislation, as part of Albania's integration process into the European Union.

The public debate has also included the MEP from the ruling party in Greece, Fredi Belleri. He has submitted an official question to the European Commission.

Beleri states that in the village of Zvërnec in the Vlora district, where mainly members of the Greek National Minority live, a private company is suspected of intervening and occupying land and property that were confiscated by the communist regime in the 1960s and have not yet been returned to their legal owners.

In the question addressed to the European Commission, Beleri wants to know whether Brussels is aware of these denunciations, what measures it is taking to protect the fundamental and property rights of national minorities in candidate countries, and whether Albania's progress in the integration process should be linked to concrete results in the protection of minorities and respect for the rule of law.
