Operation "Spirit"

The Criminal Court of Kosovo has sentenced two of those arrested as part of Operation "Spirit" for cracking down on drug trafficking.

Jovan Memaj was sentenced to a total of 8 years in prison for charges of drug cultivation, drug trafficking, organized criminal group, and laundering of criminal proceeds.

While Bernard Tahiraj was sentenced to 2 years in prison for "drug trafficking", carried out in collaboration with a structured criminal group.

Operation "Spirit" took place in July 2021, where several criminal groups were hit. The investigation by the Italian authorities for 5 years led to the arrest of a total of 38 people, including police officers and Saimir Tahiri's 2 companions, Agustin Deda and Hekuran Marku.

At that time, 4 million euros of assets were seized. According to the SPAK file, members of this group are accused of having trafficked about 1 ton of cannabis to Italy in collaboration with 4 Italians and an Albanian known as Eltjon Bregu.

The trial of the defendants has continued to be divided, with some receiving ordinary trials and others being dismissed. In 2023, the Special Court sentenced 15 people accused of being members of this group to a total of 150 years in prison.
