Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a common virus that can affect different parts of your body.
There are over 100 types of HPV, including types that affect limbs such as the hands or feet, and about 30 types of HPV that affect the genitals in both women and men. Some types of HPV are harmless, while others are high-risk and can lead to cancer, the most common of which is cervical cancer.
Genital HPVs are sexually transmitted infections (STIs) that are spread through direct physical (sexual) contact.
These types fall into two categories:
low-risk HPVs, which are rarely associated with cancer.
High-risk HPVs, which include about 14 types that can cause cancer. HPV testing shows whether you are currently or have been infected with a type of HPV. Determining the specific type is called HPV genotyping.
Intermedica conducts testing through DNA virus (HPV) screening. A patient's cells are examined in the laboratory for HPV genetic material (DNA). If the presence of the disease is detected, HPV genotyping can be performed to determine the type that causes it.
