A mega-operation to fight corruption has been developed by EUROPOL with the cooperation of law enforcement authorities in seven countries, among them Albania.

From the operation carried out during the month of November, EUROPOL informs that 49 cases have been handled, involving 233 people, some of whom have already been arrested.

The European police say that a total of 267 raids were carried out and 5.5 million euros were seized.

The issues are related to corruption, misappropriation of funds and misuse of public functions.

An example is a Portuguese case, which targeted the misuse of funds and abuse of office. Portuguese authorities investigated the use of public money by a political party between 2018 and 2021, which resulted in 20 investigations. In another case, Dutch authorities arrested three suspects as part of a bribery investigation into the disclosure of confidential information related to a procurement procedure for an oil storage company. This has led to the seizure of 2.5 million euros.

In a third case, French authorities arrested an elected official who held executive functions in French overseas territories, together with two of his associates, directors of a company in which he had a vested interest. The value of the public procurement contracts signed by the company, especially with the administration supervised by the elected representative, amounts to 2.3 million euros.
