Europol has cracked down on a criminal network, consisting of 28 members of the 'Ndrangheta of Italian origin, but there were also Albanian citizens.
Europol itself provided details about the operation, but did not reveal the identities of the people in custody.
All that is known is that an Italian, residing in Calabria, together with his three sons, collaborated closely with an Albanian criminal group, which managed some of the logistical aspects of drug trafficking.
Albanian members of this network are suspected of organizing the handling of shipments from Latin America through various Spanish and Dutch ports.
Then, also by Albanians, the drugs were transported to Italy.
In addition to the entire transportation operation, Albanians were also responsible for selling drugs in Rome.
The arrested are suspected of trafficking at least 1,019 kg of cocaine and 1,497 kg of hashish. This large amount of drugs is suspected to have passed into Italy in more than 80 trafficking operations. In addition to drug trafficking, Italian prosecutors suspect that 4 Italians kidnapped a drug trafficker and raped him, causing him physical and psychological trauma. The torture inflicted on this person, who has also not been identified by name, was filmed on a phone and distributed to spread fear, silence and submission to other gangs in Rome.
EUROPOL's reaction:
Europol has supported Italian law enforcement in dealing a major blow to the 'Ndrangheta criminal organization. In a day of action across Italy, Spain and Albania on 8 July 2025, special intervention teams arrested 28 suspected criminals of Italian and Albanian nationality. Among the individuals detained is an Italian citizen from the Calabria region suspected of setting up a criminal structure for the cocaine trade in the San Basilio area of ??Rome.
This individual, along with his three sons, is suspected of working closely with an Albanian criminal group that handled some of the logistical aspects of the drug trafficking trade. Albanian members of this network are suspected of organizing the extraction of cargoes from various Spanish and Dutch ports, as well as the subsequent transport to Italy. In addition, they were responsible for the sale of drugs in other parts of Rome.
Investigations show that the cocaine sold in Italy was purchased in South America and transported in containers to ports across Europe. The transport from the port of Gioia Tauro in Calabria to Rome was allegedly facilitated by Calabrian criminal intermediaries.
Torture as a tool to instill fear within the criminal organization
The arrested individuals are suspected of having trafficked at least 1019 kilograms of cocaine and 1497 kg of hashish in 80 trafficking operations. Prosecutors suspect that four Italian individuals kidnapped a drug trafficker, causing him physical and psychological harm - an example of severe violence associated with the 'Ndrangheta criminal organization. The torture was filmed on a mobile phone, and the video was then disseminated with the aim of instilling fear, silence and submission in members of the Rome-based criminal group.
This complex investigation also revealed the sophisticated communication methods used to exchange information within the criminal organization. To avoid detection by authorities, its members relied on encrypted messages via devices distributed by an Albanian criminal service provider, who was also arrested on July 8.
