The number of victims of accidents at work has increased significantly in recent years, according to a study by the Institute of Public Health (ISHP). According to data from 2018 to 2023, 194 people lost their lives in accidents at work.

The Institute of Public Health notes that Albania still faces serious challenges, while in the EU 1 in 1000 accidents at work is fatal (2019), in Albania 1 in 6 accidents leads to the loss of a worker's life.

The number of fatal accidents at work has increased in recent years. The number of victims at work has increased from 19 in 2013 to 38 in 2019, notes the IHP study. Furthermore, the number of deaths reported according to the State Inspectorate of Labor and Social Services (IShPShSh), stands at 32 for the year 2022 and 30 for 2023. According to the inspectorate, during 2023 a total of 218 cases of accidents at work were registered, of which after verification or investigation 84.8% resulted in accidents at work.

In 2023, 168 employees were classified and certified as having an accident at work, 30 of which resulted in loss of life.

The sectors most at risk for accidents at work are mining, electricity, construction, manufacturing enterprises and road accidents. The latter are classified as accidents at work, because they have the legal elements of accident classification, e.g.: the employee was in the performance of a duty according to his job description, by order of the employer or in the direct line of the route that runs from home to work and vice versa.

Workplace accidents have been a focus of Public Health for years, and mainly the construction and mining sectors are reported to be the most problematic. Experts claim that an important role in preventing accidents at work is played by strengthening cooperation through all institutions and competent authorities according to the relevant specifications in the treatment and investigation of any incident or accident that occurs.

The protection system derived from our labor legislation includes legal norms that regulate rights and obligations in terms of limiting working hours, rest, protection of young people and women, etc. But public health experts suggest identifying hazardous sectors and professions that require prioritization and effective formulation of legislation with special policies and programs.

According to estimates by the International Labor Organization (ILO), almost three million workers die each year worldwide due to work-related accidents and diseases, an increase of more than 5% compared to 2015./Monitor
