UEFA has officially announced the name of the referee who will referee the delicate Serbia-Albania match, valid for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers and which will take place at the new Leskovac stadium.
Top Channel journalist Endi Tufa learns that the person in question is István Kovács, the Romanian UEFA "Elite" class referee, one of the most experienced and trusted referees in European football.
The appointment of Kovács by the UEFA Referees Committee is seen as a clear signal of the seriousness with which this match, which carries a great sporting, emotional and political burden, is being treated.
The match between Serbia and Albania returns to the spotlight 11 years after the events of Belgrade in 2014, making every detail, including the referee, of particular importance.
Final weight referee
István Kovács, 41, has been a FIFA international referee since 2010 and part of UEFA's "Elite" group. He is one of the most prominent names in European refereeing, with a rich career in the continent's most prestigious competitions.
In 2022, Kovács refereed the historic first UEFA Europa Conference League final between Roma and Feyenoord at the “Arena Kombëtare” in Tirana. Two years later, he was selected for the UEFA Europa League final (Atalanta–Bayer Leverkusen, Dublin 2024), while in May 2025 he refereed the UEFA Champions League final between Paris Saint-Germain and Inter – an achievement that places him at the highest level of world refereeing.
Strict, but trustworthy
His style is known for its strong discipline and high control of the game. Kovács has a reputation as a referee who does not allow deviations from the rules, but at the same time manages to maintain authority and calm even in matches of maximum tension.
At Euro 2024, he drew attention for the way he managed the match between the Czech Republic and Turkey, where he gave out a record number of cards, an example of his determined and uncompromising style.
A choice that underlines the importance of the match
The appointment of an experienced referee in a European final is seen as a guarantee of fairness and professionalism for a match that carries more than just three points.
Serbia-Albania is one of the most sensitive matches of the qualifiers, and UEFA seeks to ensure complete control of the situation and calm on the field through such a referee.
In a challenge where every gesture, decision or episode can be interpreted with emotions, the presence of István Kovács is seen as a factor of stability. The match in Leskovac, in addition to being a test for both national teams, will also be an important test for the Romanian referee who has already shown that he knows how to handle the pressure of the final.
Traveling fans are not allowed in this match, and DigitAlb has decided to broadcast it exclusively for all red and black supporters.
