Faruk Koca, President Ankaragycy, who ended up on the front pages of the world press after punching the referee, has a rich political career behind him. In 2006, he was again in the epicenter of the chronicles, after he saved the life of the leader of Turkey.

Faruk Koca, the president of Ankaragycy, is a politician. He was born in Bala (Ankara) in 1964. He is one of the founding members of the AKP, Turkey's main party, led by President Erdogan. He was the deputy of Ankara for two legislatures, from 2002 to 2011, in the years of the entry into politics and the parliamentary majority of the AKP.

His party has announced that Koca, arrested directly after the event, has been expelled for disciplinary reasons. Erdogan himself reacted with a post on 'X', after the serious event that happened on Monday evening. "I condemn the attack on referee Halil Umut Meler and wish him a speedy recovery."

Koca "saved" Erdogan in 2006. The then prime minister of Turkey had a health problem and was being transported to the hospital, but remained inside his armored car. The bodyguards were not able to open the doors and at that moment Koca intervened. He found a stick nearby, broke one of the windows and pulled Erdogan out of the car.

Koca took the leadership of Ankaragycy in 2021, with more than half of the votes of the club's general assembly. During a match with Besiktas in September 2022, a fan of his team entered the pitch and kicked an opposing player.

Koca justified the episode, blaming the referee: "The way he managed the match made me nervous. There are 25 thousand fans who understand football, the referee does not act with the same standard for fouls and cards. He is to blame for the incident."

The referee who was a victim of violence said that Koca had threatened to kill him at the time he punched him.
