At first it seemed like a simple quarrel between friends in a cafe. Then the discussion moved outside and that's where the tragedy happened. 43-year-old Volkan Kahraman, the former midfielder of the Austrian national team of Turkish origin, was shot dead in the middle of a street in Vienna.
DOUBLE MURDER
The murder happened yesterday morning on the outskirts of Simmering. The killer Orhan, a 46-year-old businessman connected to the world of sports, then shot himself. Medical help was of no use. Both died instantly.
The sight of their bodies lying on the street, in the middle of a pool of blood, shocked the whole of Austria. Police investigations revealed that Volkan and Orhan knew each other well and had been friends for a long time. The motive is not yet clear. But, according to Austrian media, jealousy was the basis of the murder.
In the nineties, Kahraman was one of the talents born in Austrian football. At the age of 17 he was bought by Feyenoord. But his career, split between the Dutch, Austrian, Turkish and Greek leagues, never really took off.
In 2003, while at Salzburg, he challenged (and eliminated) Udinese in the UEFA Cup. Kahraman has worn the jersey of the Austrian national team three times. After he stopped playing football, he started coaching. Then he jumped into politics. So much so that in 2017 he ran for the National Council elections in the ranks of the People's Party.
