Gianluca Vialli

Former Italian and Juventus footballer Gianluca Vialli has died at the age of 58. He has closed his eyes forever in London where he was being treated in a clinic for pancreatic cancer.

The Champions League winner with Juventus was diagnosed with a pancreatic tumor in 2017 and recently his condition worsened. He was admitted to a hospital in London, while his family stayed by his side.

Until December he was Roberto Mancini's assistant in Italy, while in November he was also in Albania when the friendly match between Albania and Italy was played.

On 14 December he withdrew from his duties with the Italian national team to receive treatment for his illness which unfortunately took his life.

"At the end of a long and difficult 'negotiation' with my wonderful team of oncologists, I have decided to suspend, hopefully temporarily, my current and future professional commitments. The goal is to use all the psycho-physical energies to help my body overcome this stage of the disease, so that I can face new adventures as soon as possible and share them with all of you. A hug" he wrote in his last message.

He became a Sampdoria legend and then moved to Juventus where he won the Champions League and in 1996 he moved to Chelsea in England.

In 1999 Viali became the coach of Chelsea and after two years he moved to Watford. He was also part of Italy's success at EURO 2020 as Mancini's assistant coach.
