EP report on Albania

The European Parliament's report on Albania for 2025 was voted on this Tuesday, May 5th.

At the meeting of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, MEPs voted with 58 votes in favor, 7 against and 7 abstentions.

"I would like to remind you that Albania has been considered by our Commissioner Marta Kos as one of the two favorites in terms of enlargement," said the Rapporteur for Albania in the EP, Andreas Schieder, during the meeting.

He also added that this report requires that reforms affect people's daily lives and that Albania give more focus to the social situation.

This report prepared by Schieder assesses the country's progress on the path towards membership in the European Union and emphasizes the importance of further reforms to guarantee a sustainable and successful membership.

However, the EP stresses that even deeper and more sustainable reforms are needed, which are essential for strengthening democratic institutions and meeting EU requirements.

The Report also assesses Albania's commitment to EU integration, highlighting the broad consensus among political parties and strong support from citizens for this process.

Albania has opened all chapters of the accession negotiations within 13 months and has taken important steps towards justice reform, with particular appreciation for the work of SPAK.

A key issue is considered the need to continue work on improving the electoral system, based on the recommendations of the OSCE/ODIHR and the Venice Commission.

Among other things, the report also evaluates Albania's commitment to EU foreign policy and regional stability, as cooperation with other Western Balkan countries is seen as a key element of the enlargement process.
