Edi Rama to British media: Protests show a normal European Albania

Prime Minister Edi Rama has told the British media outlet "UnHerd" that the protests held in recent months in Albania are no longer the same as those in June.

According to him, more political parties and opposition groups have been involved in the recent protests, including extreme left and right forces.

Rama said that, despite the tensions, he is "very proud" that the protests have been taking place for days in a largely peaceful manner.

According to the Prime Minister, the fact that citizens can protest on the boulevard without being hindered shows that Albania is behaving like a normal European country, where protests are part of democratic life.

The Prime Minister also rejected the idea that the protests represent all of Albanian society.

He argued that a significant portion of the recent protesters are affiliated with opposition parties and political groups that seek the overthrow of the government.

Rama said that social networks have played a major role in mobilizing protesters.

According to him, a high percentage of the content that has fueled the protests was produced outside Albania.

He linked this particularly to the involvement of Jared Kushner, Ivanka Trump, and the debate about tourism projects in Albania.

"The algorithm did a lot to bring people to the boulevard," Rama said, arguing that the protests' connection to Kushner and the Trump family has led to them receiving more international attention.

According to him, this issue has also attracted people who are against Donald Trump and have amplified the protest on social media.

Regarding the projects in Zvërnec and Sazan, Rama has previously defended the position that the protests should not be interpreted as proof that the projects have begun or that protected areas have already been violated.

In the "UnHerd" article, Rama is presented as a prime minister who sees the current situation not as a crisis of the regime, but as an expression of political and social dissatisfaction in an Albania that, according to him, has changed significantly economically during the years of his government.
