"Respect the presumption of innocence!", Eurodemocrat Group in the EP: Erion Veliaj's case is deeply worrying for Albanian democracy

The European Democrats (EDP/PDE) political group in the European Parliament has made a strong reaction regarding the case of Mayor Erion Veliaj, who has been held in detention for more than 550 days. In their statement, they state that Veliaj’s case is deeply worrying for Albanian democracy and that they join the call on the Albanian authorities to respect the rule of law, the presumption of innocence and the principle of proportionality.

The Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, has been in pre-trial detention since February 10, 2025, for almost a year and a half. He was only formally charged in July 2025, after 163 days in pre-trial detention. Recently, the Constitutional Court of Albania overturned a decision of the Supreme Court and ordered a review of his pre-trial detention, questioning its proportionality in relation to his mandate as democratically elected Mayor of Tirana.

We join in calling on the Albanian authorities to respect the rule of law, the presumption of innocence and the principle of proportionality. This case comes against a background of deep concern for Albanian democracy. We will continue to keep this issue in mind, because Albania deserves a European future – a future that is fully democratic, transparent and strongly committed to the fight against corruption, while ensuring that justice is always administered with impartiality, independence and respect for fundamental rights.
