"Resignation? Maybe the time has come to explain" - Rama talks about

Prime Minister Edi Rama has spoken about the protests and the moment when he declared that he had even considered resigning, as well as the impact of technology and unrealistic profiles in promoting certain narratives on social networks.

During the interview with journalist Rudina Xhunga, as part of his podcast, Rama said that the reactions and dissatisfaction of citizens have pushed him to analyze the changes that have occurred in Albanian society and the increase in expectations towards governance.

"In fact, that mirror became more and more interesting to me to understand what it is. I believe that there begins a true test for a leader, a manager, one that no one escapes, especially, especially in the intermediate phase, to have pride or right, and the courage to accept that, hey, the one who challenges you may be right," said Rama.

The Prime Minister then focused on the statement made after the protests began in the capital, when he said he had even considered resigning.

"The resignation, perhaps the moment has come to explain it," said Rama, citing as an example the case of a mayor who, despite investments made for a community, was faced with the dissatisfaction of residents.

According to Rama, this should not necessarily be seen as ingratitude, but as a consequence of changing citizens' expectations.

"The more the country moves, the more the citizen is inclined to say 'what about this other one?'. Until yesterday, there was a time in Albania when votes were won with pebbles. They would throw pebbles in a neighborhood and people would cast their votes, they would express their gratitude with votes.

"I have experienced a time when a road, a school built, a lighting system, was accompanied by applause and big smiles. That is no longer the case," the prime minister said.

Rama admitted that he initially did not understand this change.

"No, I didn't expect it, I didn't understand it right away. I had to start following the signs, analyzing, and there were some moments that helped me a lot to understand," he said.

The Prime Minister described this phase as the "revolution of high expectations", arguing that improving a service automatically brings new demands from citizens.

“It’s a change of season for Albania,” Rama said. “It’s called the revolution of high expectations. A city that lives on two hours of water a day, when it starts getting 14 hours of water a day, it wants 24 hours.”

In another part of the interview, Rama also spoke about the impact of technology and fake accounts on the creation and spread of narratives on social networks, also referring to the debate that has accompanied the investment project in Sazan.

According to the prime minister, there are artificially created profiles that take on the appearance of real users and are used to give voice to different narratives.

"They were not, they do not exist. They are created in a laboratory and give voice to different narratives," Rama declared.

Speaking about the narratives that, according to him, have been raised around the investment and its connection to Israel, the prime minister said that they have been fueled by an "army" of unrealistic accounts.

Rama said that this is a new reality, where artificially created profiles can take on the appearance of real users and be used to amplify certain narratives.

According to the Prime Minister, these accounts are difficult to identify even by major social media platforms.

"They were not, they do not exist. They are created in a laboratory and give voice to different narratives," Rama said.

Speaking specifically about the narratives that, according to him, have been raised around the investment and its connection to Israel, Rama described them as created and driven by an "army" of unrealistic profiles.

"They give voice to different narratives. What did this have to do with the relationship with Israel? So it was a narrative driven by this army of unreal soldiers, raised in technology laboratories because they grow, take on appearance, take shape and you don't know if they are real or not. We have created cyber defenses out of trouble because we were faced with an attack from Iran.

We were unable to defend ourselves and we saw that we needed to strengthen ourselves in this regard. Today, we have state-of-the-art cyber defense technology, and we also have many identification capacities for foreign interference. We have learned that before attributing an attack, we should do so by ensuring the truth," said Rama.
