Berisha: "Open Balkan" will massively bankrupt our farms
Sali Berisha

The chairman of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, said that Albanian farms will suffer the greatest consequences from Albania's inclusion in the Open Balkans.

"The opening of customs within the framework of the "Open Balkans" will massively mark the bankruptcy of our farms. Imports of agricultural products from Serbia have increased by 250% in just one year. At a time when the current and decades-long subsidies for the farmers of the former Yugoslavia have been hundreds of times larger than the crumbs that the Albanian farmers may have received", Berisha said in a conversation with the farmers in Kashar.

"This sector is in decline, in decline, in overturning. It is beyond any doubt the most neglected sector by the government, but neglect is one side, punishment is the other and this is one of the most important sectors of our economy, which provides over 20% of GDP, which employs over 50% of the workforce women and 35% of men in the country. A sector that, instead of being developed, strengthened, supported, has a great decline with very serious consequences for the country".

Berisha also said that agriculture is the sector which in all its products deserves and needs subsidies.

"The subsidy in agriculture is not a financial loss, but it is a profit story for all parties, it is a profit story because the one who receives the subsidy is helped for a greater, more guaranteed success, his successor is a direct interest not only of family but society as a whole. It is in the interest of the whole society because production and export are extremely important factors in creating balances for a stable economy", he said.

"This government has a hostile attitude towards farmers and agriculture. You may find this term harsh, but no, it is not, because if he in the fiscal system punishes farmers, he behaves like them as an invader, not as an institution of law, he does not respect the law, he does not respect those principles that are necessary for a rule of law. The cessation of subsidies is one side, but this puts Albanian farmers in unequal conditions with the farmers of the surrounding countries, not to mention the farmers of the EU. Unilateral taxation with VAT constitutes another major punishment for farmers. The lack of stimulus for exports is another irresponsible act of this government".
