The head of the Democratic Party parliamentary group, Gazment Bardhi, has reacted to President Bajram Begaj's invitation for consultations regarding the setting of the date of the next local elections.

Through a post on social media, he described the invitation as "political theater", claiming that the election date was predetermined by Prime Minister Edi Rama.

The democratic MP has also leveled accusations against the head of state, describing him as a "minister without portfolio" in the service of Rama.

According to Bardhi, the president should react to citizens' concerns about guaranteeing free and fair elections, instead of remaining silent.

Gazment Bardhi's full post:

I have just read the letter from the President's Institution calling for consultations regarding the date that Edi Rama has set for the upcoming local elections. I despise this political theater with disgust.

Bajram Begaj's invitation is completely disregarded and does not even deserve comment. Unfortunately, Albania does not have a President of the Republic who fulfills his constitutional role, but a minister without portfolio at the service of Edi Rama.

Albanians are taking to the streets to demand, among other things, guarantees for free and fair elections. If Albania had a President who truly exercises his constitutional function, he would treat this issue as a democratic emergency and respond seriously to the concerns that citizens have been raising for months.

Instead of remaining silent in the face of these concerns, the President should be the voice of the Constitution, democracy, and citizens. But, instead of fulfilling this obligation, he chooses to remain in the role of a spectator, serving power instead of protecting the institution he represents.
