After winning the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics, Geoffrey Hinton, often known as the “Godfather of Artificial Intelligence,” used his global platform to deliver a stark warning about the technology he himself helped create.

Although he acknowledged that AI will bring massive benefits in productivity, health, and education, his warnings focused on some critical “existential” and short-term risks.

Hinton's main concern is that AI will soon surpass human intelligence.

He argues that we have very few examples in history where a "less intelligent thing" successfully controls a "more intelligent thing".

He warned that once AI becomes smarter than us, it could develop its own goals, including the goal of self-preservation or taking control to ensure its objectives are achieved efficiently.

He expressed concern that companies motivated by short-term profits are not allocating enough resources to “linearization research” (ensuring that AI does what we want).

He noted that many big tech companies are lobbying for less regulation while the technology is still in its infancy, which he sees as a risky gamble.

He warned of the massive impact on the job market, noting that while productivity will increase, it could only benefit the wealthy while making many workers "irrelevant."
