Hundreds of celebrities climbed the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York on Monday night for the Met Gala, bringing a variety of interpretations to this year's dress code, "Fashion is Art."
Visitors ascended the front steps to a green backdrop reminiscent of Monet, with the museum creating a garden-like setting with romantic hanging flowers, green hedge barriers, vases of lavender and a carpet resembling moss tiles.
The theme reflected a companion exhibition titled “The Art of Costume” at the Met’s Costume Institute, for which the gala is a major source of revenue. This year, the Met Gala raised a record $42 million, up from last year’s record of $31 million, the museum announced at a press conference before the event.
The guest list was particularly rich this year, with the event's co-chairs including multi-faceted musical sensation Beyoncé, actress Nicole Kidman, tennis star Venus Williams and Vogue's global editorial director Anna Wintour.
A parade of celebrities including Madonna, Bad Bunny, Heidi Klum and Katy Perry were almost unrecognizable thanks to their dedication to the "costume" theme.
