In a recent study, India has emerged as the world's biggest plastic polluter, churning out 9.3 million tonnes of plastic every year. The country accounts for about a fifth of global plastic emissions, the study in Nature found. This figure also highlights a significant environmental concern, with India's plastic emissions exceeding those of other countries by a significant margin.

After India, Nigeria and Indonesia rank second and third in plastic emissions, with 3.5 and 3.4 million tons respectively.

The study points out that the official rate of waste generation in India, which is about 0.12 kilograms per capita per day, is at risk of being underestimated. The report suggests that waste collection figures are also inflated. This discrepancy may stem from the exclusion of data from rural areas, open burning of uncollected waste and recycled waste from the informal sector.

For a long time, China has been identified as the main global polluter, but the country has fallen to the fourth position. This change reflects China's progress in waste management, including investment in controlled incineration over the past 15 years.

The research determined that global emissions of plastic waste reached 52.1 million tons in 2020. Notably, 69% of global emissions of plastic waste, or 35.7 million tons per year, come from 20 countries, including four low-income countries, nine lower-middle-income and seven upper-middle-income countries. High-income nations, despite producing more plastic waste, are not among the top 90 polluters because of their comprehensive collection and controlled disposal systems.
