All over the world, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer globally with approximately 2.3 million new cases each year. It represents a quarter of all cancers in women with 70% of mortality. Health system barriers and factors such as low levels of patient awareness and knowledge are contributing to late stage diagnoses and poor outcomes.
In many resource-limited settings, breast cancer affects a relatively younger population, contributing significantly to premature mortality.
Luljeta Vathi, an oncologist at the Elbasan hospital, said that in 2008, the incidence was 1 in 10 women, while now it is 1 in 8 women.
"What is important to mention is that compared to previous years, the age of diagnosed women has decreased, but it is also noticeable that we are catching more and more cases in the first stages when many years ago, it was rare to catch the disease in the first stages".
Eugena Tomini, the director of ISHP, indicated that there are 744 cases diagnosed with breast cancer for 2023 and according to the analysis, we have an increase with other years where there were about 700 cases.
The Minister of Health and Social Protection, Albana Koçiu, said that the situation in Elbasan is not good, as the city where the most cases have increased, as a result of late examinations.
A year ago, about 25,000 mammograms were performed in Albania. Of which, 5 thousand are examinations from mobile mammography units. 11 thousand of them were carried out in October.
In Albania, about 5,000 women live with the disease of breast tumor, which has increased since 2015, according to ISHP statistics, by about 9%.
Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in women, accounting for about 16% of all causes of cancer and 6% of all cancer deaths.
The Minister of Health declared today that the slogan for this year is "It's worth living".
"The slogan has been chosen as an awareness to recall all the beautiful and valuable things that give meaning to life by calling to turn our eyes to ourselves to perform a check-up. It will be necessary that during the month of October, but not only, during all the months of the year, they should turn their eyes to themselves, take care of themselves, take care of their loved ones, take care of their sisters, of their friends and they use it to do an examination, an ultrasound, a mammogram necessary to save their lives. "It's worth living" is a slogan that makes you look at the little things that don't matter in everyday life, but it's the little things that give meaning to life. It is the love for the family, it is the sparkle in the children's eyes, there are many small everyday things that are worth living for, and therefore the slogan is a call to all women and girls to look at themselves and take stock of how much there are many things in life that are worth living", said Koçiu.
The minister stressed that examination and then early diagnosis increase the chance of success in curing this disease.
"Unfortunately, it is a disease that has an increasing trend, but 99% of cases detected early are totally curable, therefore the month of October is dedicated to awareness precisely to make checks and catch this disease early. The earlier we catch it, the more likely it is to cure it successfully", continued the minister.
Koçiu stated that "in order to provide facilities for breast cancer examination in regional hospitals, the referral system has been removed, that is, without having the family doctor's recommendation because we want to shorten the time to find you next to anyone who will receive a service. We have also launched notifications through e-Albania so that every woman is notified of the examinations."
"When we talk about cancer, women become aware, but in their everyday life, women forget about themselves, so this October is dedicated to those who turn their eyes to themselves to say that they should spend 15 minutes on themselves in order to ensure and win the battle with life", emphasized the Minister of Health and Social Protection./Gazeta Si
