A New Zealand woman has been jailed for two months after her obese dog died.
The dog, named Nuggi, weighed 53 kg when he was rescued by authorities in 2021. According to a Newsweek report, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) said Nuggi was in such critical condition that he could barely walk 10 meters without pausing for breath. His legs were visibly bowing under his great weight.
The dog escaped from its owner's home, where many other dogs were found, and was placed in the care of the SPCA. A veterinarian who examined the dog concluded that the excess weight caused severe long-term discomfort and distress.
The owner reportedly fed Nuggin up to 10 pieces of chicken a day, in addition to dog biscuits, and failed to provide him with proper exercise.
Despite losing nearly 9kg in two months, Nuggi died of a liver haemorrhage. An autopsy revealed underlying health issues, including liver disease and Cushing's disease.
SPCA chief executive Todd Westwood described Nuggin as "one of the healthiest animals they've ever come across". He said the dog was clearly suffering from severe overfeeding and lack of exercise.
"Instead of seeking help or adjusting the dog's diet and lifestyle, Nugg's owner continued to feed him until he was unable to walk," he said.
The owner pleaded guilty to neglecting the dog's physical, health and behavioral needs and was sentenced in the Manukau District Court. In addition to the jail time, she was fined $1,222 and banned from owning dogs for a year.
