A tense and emotional meeting took place in Tel Aviv between the United States special envoy, Steve Witkoff, and the families of Israeli hostages still held by Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
"I would like to have good news for you, but the situation is complicated. There are many reasons that I cannot explain. Hamas is a terrorist organization," Witkoff declared to family members, pointing out the great difficulties that are accompanying diplomatic efforts to return the hostages.
According to him, the negotiations with Hamas have been "extremely frustrating", as the Palestinian side "is not keeping its word".
Witkoff said that the current US priority is not to expand the war, but to end it, stressing that diplomatic efforts should be focused on a comprehensive agreement that guarantees the release of all hostages and brings a lasting end to the conflict.
"Most Israelis want the hostages to return home and the majority of the population of Gaza wants the same because that would pave the way for the rehabilitation of the Gaza Strip," he said.
The meeting, which lasted about three hours, was described as emotionally charged by the Hostage Families Forum, while Israeli media reported that participants demanded more clarity and decisiveness in the international stance towards Hamas.
