Celentano: Cutugno had made "L'Italiano" for me. I said no and
Toto Cutugno and Adriano Celentano

The bond between Toto Cutugno and Adriano Celentano has always been strong. Toto wrote great hits for Celentano, starting with "Soli", with which he dominated the charts in the late 70's. But it was a decisive moment in the careers of both, a kind of sliding door, which the same Adriano recalled in tributes to his colleague who died on Tuesday at the age of 80: the refusal to sing "L'Italiano", which it was composed for him.

"Sometimes too much scrupulousness can turn into worldly stupidity," wrote Celentano.

"Hello Toto! I remember we were in the car... a Fiat 500 I think, and you insisted that I record "L'Italiano" - writes Celentano on his social channels.

“A fantastic bombshell just ended the night before we met.

"I haven't slept all night - he told me - thinking about the success we will have, you as a performer and me as an author", the song was really strong!!! But what stopped me most of all was the most important sentence: "I am a true Italian". An irreplaceable phrase above all, since it is precisely on this that the entire scaffolding of that great work rests.

And hearing myself say: "I am a true Italian," I felt as if I wanted to stand up. He couldn't believe his ears: "but you don't understand that this is exactly the issue, I wrote it thinking about you, because you really are a real Italian".

"Yes, I know", - I told him - but I don't want to say it myself. Not always, but sometimes too much scrupulousness can turn into universal stupidity. But even though you sang it as I would sing it, today, if I had to sing it again, I would sing it exactly as you sang it! You were and will remain, an unforgettable great! I love you so much. Adriano".

Celentano defines it as "world stupidity," and it's actually hard to define it otherwise in retrospect. Because Cutugno's initial disappointment at seeing his proposal rejected turns into great luck. The patron of the Sanremo Festival, Gianni Ravera, persuaded Toto to sing the song himself, with which he was introduced at the 1983 Festival.

For the public it was a triumph, ovations and throwing flowers at every performance, but for the judges it is not the same: Tiziana Rivale wins with "Sarà quel che essere", "L'Italiano" ranks only fifth. But on the other hand, it is most voted with Totip cards, which only from next year will become the official voting method to decide the winner. It is the indication that the general public liked the song. And in fact it will become a great classic, also loved internationally, capable of selling 100 million copies making Toto an icon (albeit highly criticized at home). And all this thanks to the great refusal of Celentano.
