The boat was sinking, about 80 migrants were rescued in the English Channel

A tragedy was avoided in the waters of the English Channel, where about 80 migrants who had left by boat from the coast of France were rescued.

The coastguard confirmed it had dispatched two helicopters to the incident, while the Royal National Lifeboat Institution dispatched lifeboats. "The search has now ended with all people accounted for and returned to land," a coastguard spokesman said.

The issue of how to stop migrants from making the dangerous crossing across the Channel is at the forefront of Britain's general election campaign. So, the Home Office said 34 people made the journey by boat on Wednesday, bringing the total number of crossings for the year to 10,779.
