Washington calls on U.S. citizens to leave Ukraine immediately

The U.S. Embassy in Kiev on Tuesday called on American citizens to leave Ukraine, due to credible information, that Russia was preparing to strike in the following days the country's civilian and government infrastructure.

The warning comes as 6 months since Moscow attacked Ukraine on August 24th, a day coinciding with the 31st anniversary of Ukraine's independence from the former Soviet Union.

Amid fears of attacks by Russia, the Ukrainian government made the decision to halt celebrations Wednesday in the country's capital.

"The State Department has information that Russia is stepping up efforts to launch attacks against civilian infrastructure and Ukrainian government objects in the following days," a U.S. Embassy statement said.

"American citizens must leave Ukraine immediately, by their means, if this were a safe thing to undertake," the statement further continued.

This is not the first time Washington has issued such a warning, but in this case the warning comes as Ukraine marks the anniversary of independence from Soviet rule.

The announcement also comes after the murder saturday in a car bomb of Darya Dugina, the daughter of a well-known Russian ultra-nationalist, close associate of President Putin. Moscow has blamed the murder on Ukrainian intelligence agents, a charge Kiev has dismissed./ Voice America
