Former US President Donald Trump has asked a judge to freeze the Justice Department's investigation into files seized from his Mar-a-Lago home.
In a lawsuit, his legal team asked that an independent attorney be appointed to oversee the documents that FBI agents obtained earlier this month.
Eleven sets of classified files were taken from Trump's Florida estate on August 8, according to the FBI.
Trump is being investigated for possible misuse of documents, the BBC reports.
US presidents must turn over all their documents and emails to a government agency called the National Archives, and the FBI is investigating whether Trump mishandled the records by moving them from the White House to Mar- a-Lago after he left office in January 2021. He has denied any wrongdoing and said the items were declassified.
In the 27-page document filed in a Florida court, Trump's legal team accuses the Justice Department search of "simply wanting the camel's nose under the roof so they can look for politically useful documents or support efforts to prevent President Trump from running again."
"President Donald J Trump is the clear front-runner in the 2024 Republican presidential primary and the 2024 general election, if he decides to run," the statement said.
"Law enforcement is a bulwark that protects Americans. It cannot be used as a weapon for political purposes."
"The shockingly aggressive move" at Mar-a-Lago by FBI agents occurred without understanding the distress it would cause the majority of Americans, Trump's lawyers said.
