9 euros a month for transport, Germany extends experiment nationwide

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Sunday called the 9-euro monthly ticket for public transport that his government introduced to help offset rising inflation a "great success" and announced talks for a succession scheme.

The German coalition government of schholz's Social Democrats, Greens and Free Democrats introduced tickets covering all local and regional public transport nationwide for June, July and August, as part of a series of measures to help families.

The 9 euro ticket will be universal to replace monthly local and regional public transport fares, which vary from $50 to $160 per month.

Many citizens have urged the government to continue the scheme, but FDP Finance Minister Christian Lindner has said it would cost Germany 14 billion euros a year that would no longer be available for investment.

However, the ticket's success showed that many citizens simply wanted a simpler ticketing system, Scholz said on the government's open-door day.

Transport Minister Volker Wissing will check with the country's 16 lands - responsible for local transport - how "convenience, usability and perhaps even affordability" can be improved on public transport, Schollz said.
