Mexico's former Attorney General Jesus Murillo Karam has been arrested in connection with the disappearance of 43 students in 2014.

These students disappeared while traveling by bus to participate in a protest in Mexico. Nothing is known about their fate, the only thing that has been discovered is some skeletal remains of only three students.

On September 26, 2014, municipal police opened fire on buses transporting students, but what happened next is still controversial.

The mysterious disappearance of the students shocked the world and sparked huge protests in Mexico against impunity and state complicity with organized crime.

According to reports, the students were allegedly first arrested by corrupt police officials and then handed over to a drug cartel, who mistook them for members of a rival gang before killing them.

Jesus Murillo Karam was in charge of the investigation into this shocking event. From his investigations, now controversial, members of a drug cartel were blamed for the murder and burning of the students.

But the results of this investigation, approved by the then president Enrique Pena Nieto, were criticized by experts and relatives of the missing students, according to whom the armed forces of the state are to blame for the disappearance of the students.

The Truth Commission created by the current president Andre Manuel Lopez Obradori, has said that the soldiers are responsible for the massacre, if indirectly, they are responsible for the negligence shown.

"Their actions, inaction or participation, allowed the disappearance and execution of the students," said Alejandro Encinas, head of the commission.

Earlier this year, President Lopez Obrador revealed that members of the navy were being investigated for tampering with evidence, including human remains found in the debris.

"Publicizing this cruel, inhumane situation and at the same time punishing those responsible helps to prevent the recurrence of such events," said the Mexican leader.

So far Jesus Murillo Karam is the most senior government official arrested in connection with the disappearance of the students.
