Anthony Fauci will step down from his roles as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and as President Joe Biden's chief medical officer at the end of this year, marking the end of 50 years as the leading infectious disease expert.

"I am announcing today that I will be stepping down as Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and Chief of NIAID's Immunoregulation Laboratory, as well as Chief Medical Advisor to President Joe Biden. I will be leaving these positions in December of this year to pursue the next chapter of my career," Fauci said.

Fauci, now 81, has served at NIAID since 1968 at the age of 27 and became director in 1984 in former President Ronald Reagan's administration.

President Joe Biden praised Fauci's work in a statement, noting his "unwavering" commitment to the work, as well as his "unparalleled spirit, energy and scientific integrity."

"Whether you have met him in person or not, he has touched the lives of all Americans with his work," Biden said.
