SHOCKING/ The boat sinks in the English Channel, suspected dead immigrants! It

A small migrant boat ran into difficulties in the early hours in the English Channel near Kent. It is suspected that some of the immigrants have died as a result.

The BBC's Simon Jones said it was understood there had been casualties, but there was still no confirmation from the authorities. Lifeboats, coastguard rescue teams and an air ambulance were dispatched to assist in a search and rescue operation.

A fishing vessel was also in the area to assist with the rescue, HM Coastguard helicopters from Lydd and Lee on Solent and one from the French Navy were also involved.
