President Vladimir Putin has canceled his annual press conference after a series of battlefield problems in Ukraine — a tacit admission that the Russian leader's war has gone awry.

Mr. Putin usually uses the year-end ritual to polish his image, answering a series of questions on domestic politics and giving the impression that he is open, even though the conference is highly controlled.

The Kremlin has censored any critics of the liberal camp who have opposed the war in Ukraine, shutting down independent media and criminalizing the dissemination of any information that differs from the official view - including the definition of "war". However, this has prompted criticism from Russian extremists, who have described the president as weak and indecisive and called for more protests over the Ukraine issue.

Political analyst Abbas Gallyamov said in a video commentary that the decision not to hold the press conference was likely to have come because Mr. Putin "has nothing to say from the point of view of strategy."

Putin ordered the invasion of Ukraine on February 24, claiming that Moscow was forced to "demilitarize" the country in the face of NATO's refusal to give Russia assurances that Ukraine would not be invited to join the alliance. Ukraine and most of the world described the Russian attack on its neighbor as an act of unprovoked aggression.

Mr. Putin and his officials had hoped to defeat the Ukrainian army within days, but fierce Ukrainian resistance, bolstered by Western arms support, immediately scuppered those plans. After a failed attempt to quickly take control of the Ukrainian capital, Russian troops withdrew from areas around Kiev in March.

In September, Ukraine regained control of large swathes of territory in the northeastern Kharkiv region and last month took control of the strategic city of Kherson.

The mobilization of 300,000 reservists ordered by Mr. Putin in September has so far failed to reverse Russia's battlefield fortunes. The mobilization order has caused hundreds of thousands of Russians to flee the country to avoid conscription, and those called up have reported severe shortages of essential equipment and weapons.

In a rare statement last week where he said the war in Ukraine was taking longer than he had anticipated, Mr Putin acknowledged that the end could be a "long process." At the same time, he claimed everything was going according to plan.

Sergei Markov, a pro-Kremlin political expert, noted that Mr. Putin's decision to cancel the news conference and not yet deliver the state speech reflects his reluctance about future decisions.

"Should we go ahead and defeat the enemy?" he wrote, echoing hard-line calls for increased missile strikes on Ukraine. "Or should we instead prepare for a difficult but necessary compromise?"
