Israeli hostage Evyatar David, who shocked the world last August when he appeared on video digging his own grave in a Hamas tunnel, was among 20 hostages released yesterday and returned to Israel.
The images from that video had shocked the world: 24-year-old David, exhausted and emaciated, a symbol of the brutality of captivity, struggling to survive in inhumane conditions.
"I haven't eaten in days ," he said, pointing to a can that he must have eaten in two days.
The video, which lasted almost five minutes and was released with the consent of his family, caused global outrage.
Yesterday, after months of negotiations and as part of the Gaza ceasefire agreement, Evyatar David was released.
He was reportedly immediately flown to Israel, where he underwent medical examinations and met with his family, who had fought a long battle for his return.
