A 12-year-old boy died in Castleford, England, on June 27, and according to a GoFundMe campaign started by a relative, the cause was a viral and dangerous challenge on social media, known as the "blackout challenge."

West Yorkshire Police said they were called to a flat at around 6.06pm following reports of a child in distress. He was taken to hospital but sadly did not survive. Authorities have confirmed the incident is not being treated as suspicious, but enquiries are continuing to establish exactly what happened.

GoFundMe organizer Agnieszka Czerniejewska identified the boy as Sebastian and said that “a dangerous online challenge took his life.” She added that his parents had raised him with love and care, but one moment online changed everything.

The “blackout” challenge involves drowning yourself to experience strange sensations, causing a lack of oxygen to the brain, a practice that can lead to fatal injuries. According to a 2022 report by The Independent, the challenge was linked to at least 20 deaths, 15 of which were children 12 years old or younger.

"Sebastian was a boy full of dreams and talent. He taught himself to play the guitar and piano, and loved to draw. He was always smiling and kind to everyone," reads the touching description of the campaign, which has so far raised over $4,100 to help his parents.

The organizer called on parents to talk to their children about the dangers they may face online. “No parent should have to experience the pain of losing a child.”
