The 12-day war between Israel and Iran ended on Tuesday. Even before the ceasefire, it appeared that the US and Israel had agreed on a future plan for the Middle East.

This is reported by the largest Israeli newspaper, Israel Hayom, referring to a source with knowledge of a crucial phone call between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, US President Donald Trump, as well as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Israeli Minister of Strategy, Ron Dermer.

According to the newspaper, Trump and Netanyahu want to quickly reach new peace agreements with Arab states and end the war in Gaza as soon as possible. A two-state solution - that is, an Israeli state alongside a Palestinian state - appears to be back on the table.

Following the US attack on Iran's nuclear facilities, the two allies – the US and Israel – have agreed on a 5-point plan for the Middle East. BILD explains the most important points:

Point 1: “The fighting in Gaza should end within two weeks,” the newspaper writes. US President Trump told reporters at the White House on Friday that he believes “within the next week there will be a ceasefire in Gaza.”

According to Israel Hayom, four Arab states – including Egypt and the United Arab Emirates – are expected to take over the administration of Gaza, replacing Hamas. The remaining Hamas leadership will be sent into exile and the 50 hostages held will finally be released.

Point 2: Several countries around the world will accept Gazans who want to leave. It has not been announced which countries this will be – however, Trump has proposed this idea several times before.

Point 3: The Abraham Accords – peace agreements between Israel and several Arab states – are expected to be expanded to include Syria and Saudi Arabia. In particular, an agreement with Syria, which has never recognized Israel as a state, would be a crucial step towards peace in the Middle East. According to Israeli television i24, a historic peace agreement between Israel and Syria could happen within this year, in which Israel would completely withdraw from Syrian territory.

Point 4: Israel intends to express its readiness for a future solution to the Palestinian conflict according to the two-state model – but only if reforms are made to the Palestinian Authority that governs the West Bank.

Point 5: According to Israel Hayom, the US will partially recognize Israeli control over the West Bank.

Netanyahu appeared to partially confirm this report on Thursday evening. In a video statement about the Israeli operation against Iran and its aftermath, he said: “This victory opens the possibility for a dramatic expansion of the peace agreements. We are working intensively on this,” the prime minister declared.

"In parallel with the release of our hostages and the defeat of Hamas. We have a window of time that must not be lost – not a single day must be wasted."/ By Jeanne Plaumann, BILD
