Switzerland's environment minister, 61-year-old socialist Simonetta Sommaruga, is promoting measures to reduce energy consumption by 15% this winter, and one of her suggestions is for people to shower together.

In an interview with the Tages Anzeiger newspaper in Zurich, the minister proposed that couples shower together as a measure to save electricity.

"I know anyway that the older the couples are, the more a suggestion like this can cause some kind of confusion," said Sommaruga.

The Swiss minister, on the other hand, does not seem to have this problem since, despite being married to the writer Lukas Hartmann, she does not share the house with him.

But Geraldine Savary, editor of women's magazine Femina, is against this idea. She has accused the ministers of trying to "administer the private life of citizens, down to the most insignificant details".

She mocked the idea in a tongue-in-cheek editorial, suggesting that the Swiss should make love every morning to warm up after turning off the heating at night, take a quick shower together and head to the office “arm in arm, after they left their cars, scooters and electric bicycles in the garage".
