Of about one billion dollars in military aid that the US Department of State announced for 17 European countries, 23 million will go to Montenegro to strengthen the defense sector.

It is not yet known how much money the other countries of the Western Balkans will receive, which, apart from Serbia, are also on the list, REL reports.

The Ministry of Interior of Kosovo did not respond to Radio Free Europe's interest in this matter.

The US Department of State said that this aid, which is also allocated to Ukraine, shows the unwavering commitment of the United States "to the future of Ukraine as a democratic, sovereign and independent state, as well as to the security of allies and partners throughout the region".

Since the administration of US President Joe Biden took office in January 2021, the US has allocated around $15.2 billion in military aid to Ukraine – especially since the end of February, when Russia launched its invasion of the country.

On September 8, the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, presented a new aid of 2.2 billion dollars, but in addition to Ukraine, it will be distributed to 17 other countries.

Ukraine, through this program, known as "Foreign Military Financing", will receive one billion dollars, while the rest will be distributed among other countries.

"They will include many of our NATO allies, as well as other regional security partners, who are at potential risk from future Russian aggression," Blinken said in a statement.

Reuters later carried a statement from a US State Department official who said the rest of the money would be split between Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Georgia, Greece, Kosovo, Latvia , Lithuania, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia.

The same was confirmed a day later on Twitter by the American mission to NATO.
